Weight loss and fat loss is hard if you can’t win the mind game that goes with it. The problem starts with itguidesth being told that you must have self control or be disciplined. Then you have to do this for the rest of your life. Who can, or wants to live like that?
To make things worse, some people believe they are not disciplined enough to stick to any kind of diet so they never start. You might have been told that you have a slow metabolism so you lose hope. If any of these describe you – then you should also be aware there is help for you.
It is not your fault that losing weight is hard. We are constantly bombarded with images and smells of fast food. Many foods, even so-called health foods, are filled with chemicals that actually create addictions and cause you to store fat. Trans fats and high fructose corn syrup are only two popular food additives that have these effects. Read labels and you will see a lot of things you don’t recognize. But here’s the good news…
Your can speed up your metabolism, and you can achieve a level of self-control to help you through difficult times. You can eliminate food cravings and after an initial “cleansing” period, you will not have to have such strong will power because you will naturally adjust to a new way of eating.
That’s right – when you start eating healthier with a weight loss program, you will eventually lose the taste for the junk foods that you have cut out. When you do eat junk food, you will feel how tired, or cranky, or bloated it actually makes you feel. You didn’t feel these effects before because you were used to it. But after being on a healthy eating regimen for a period of time, you get healthier and you can feel how junk food affects you. This factor also helps you to stay on your healthy eating path.
However, you must take the first step. It may seem easy to start, but many weight loss programs are hard to stay on. It seems no one can bypass this aspect of weight loss. There will come a time when it becomes difficult. It is now that it becomes important for you to win this part of the challenge. Here are some tips to help you get through these hard times.
Tip 1 – Buy a workout CD and use it each morning. If you can’t do the whole thing, at least watch it – it can be very motivating. The next day watch it and do just the warm up. The next day vow to do 20 minutes. It will get easier as you get more fit.
Tip 2 – Purchase a diet book. These are good motivators. They help reinforce why you should lose weight, and usually will explain why their way works. Some even have before and after pictures that are very motivating. Most books are good and do work – remember there are many paths to weight loss. So choose one that you will enjoy reading.
Tip 3 – Join a gym or health club. This is a good place to go with friends and exercise. Many gyms have racquetball courts and even juice bars. Gyms or health clubs can be great places to hang out instead of a night club or bar.
Tip 4 – Visualize your goals. Top athletes do this before workouts and before competitions. They visualize the results they want. They do this because it is a proven system that works. Many times we give up because we believe we could never reach a goal. Visualizing your goals makes them more real, therefore more attainable. The key to getting results is consistency (you must do it every day) and using the right technique.
It does take practice to sit quietly and think about your goals. During this time you have to attempt to use all five of your senses in the visualization. See what you want, feel what you are doing, smell the room you are in, taste something like gum, hear what is going on around you. Practice this each day and it will get easier.
Tip 5 – Make a plan. Plan which weight loss program you will use. Then plan your meals and write them down. Plan your grocery list and stick to it. Plan what extras you will use to enhance your weight loss goals, such as exercise or visualization. Write out a schedule so you don’t use “not enough time” as an excuse. Make your plan in writing and stick to it for a better chance at success.
Losing weight can be a challenge. Be sure you are eating healthy, don’t try to lose too much at once or it will backfire on you, and try one or two of these tips. They can be a great asset so you can win the weight loss mind game.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 450 million people worldwide are affected by mental, neurological or behavioral problems. However, determining that someone has a mental illness, and which one it could be, is one of the greatest challenges psychiatrists and psychologists face today. To date, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (the psychiatrists bible), lists over 400 disorders.
It’s quite normal to sometimes feel happy or sad, anxious or fearful, forgetful or confused. These are the hills and valleys of emotion in our daily lives. But when a person’s emotions, thoughts or behavior frequently trouble them, or disrupt their lives and those around them, they may be suffering from mental illness. Even though as many as one in five people are thought to suffer from a form of mental illness, it still carries with it stigma and discrimination. Because of this people are reluctant to admit they have a problem and seek help and treatment. Unfortunately, when mental illness goes untreated the result can be suicide, which claims 873,000 lives a year. The economic costs of these conditions are also enormous and growing. According to the WHO, depression is expected to account for more lost years of healthy life than any other disease by 2030, except for HIV/AIDS.
What Causes Mental Illness?
Western scientists can tell us what happens as a result of certain mental health issues, but they cannot give us the underlying cause. For instance, brain scans have directly linked depression with changes in levels of neurotransmitters – chemicals that convey messages across neurons – people suffering from depression often display lowered levels of neurotransmitter serotonin. Serotonin’s main effects include improving mood and giving you that “satisfied” feeling from food. It’s also thought to help promote sleep and relaxation. Alzheimer’s disease, a major source of dementia and memory loss in the elderly, is a result of an accumulation of protein plaques, which choke neurons in the brain. Untreated HIV infection, syphilis, Lyme disease and malaria are also thought capable of triggering a variety of mental illnesses. Modern medicine does not recognize a link between the body, mind and emotions. They look at the body as a machine, working independently of the mind.
The 5,000-year-old holistic science of Ayurvedic medicine, on the other hand, views the human being as body, mind and spirit, including the emotions and psychology, on all levels. It incorporates longevity, rejuvenation and self-realization therapies utilizing herbs, diet, yoga; breathing and physical exercises and meditation, massage, aromas and mantras. Ayurveda uses the concept of three biological humors; vata (air), pitta (fire), and kapha (earth) that if become unbalanced can affect us mentally, with disturbed emotions and thoughts, this will usually be reflected on a physical level also and visa versa. Through recent scientific research Dr. Candace Pert has come to a similar conclusion in her book Molecules of Emotion. Pert refers to the mind-body connection or a network of emotions linking the mind to the body. She demonstrates that cells throughout the body secrete ’emotional’ hormones; these are then picked up by nerve impulses to produce the corresponding changes in mood and behavior. The immune system is linked with the brain (pituitary gland) and the endocrine system. Endorphins are the body’s natural ‘opiates’ or pleasure hormones and are known to be increased by pranayama (yogic breathing) and yoga asana. Stress affects the body by releasing hormones, adrenaline and corticosterone from the brain and the immune system. Once in a stressed state the body itself can continue the stress cycle by the continuous activation of corticosterone. Depressed and traumatized people have high levels of corticosterone and often have a decreased level of immunity. This physiological state can be deactivated when the trauma and stress are released. In Ayurveda this means transforming the negative emotions, like fear, pain, anger and grief into positive ones.
The Function of the Astral Body
In Ayurveda and many other natural healing methods a subtle astral or emotional body is recognized to exist simultaneously with the physical body. It is linked to the physical body by energy centers or chakras. Subtle channels known as nadis transport prana or the essence of life energy and thought to corresponding glands around the body. Disruption in the flow of these energies causes psychological disease. As mentioned yogic breathing can keep these energies circulating, as can certain herbs such as calamus, basil, turmeric, guggul, myrrh, frankincense and cedar.
There is a shield between the astral and physical bodies, which protect us from negative thoughts or energies that are within the astral atmosphere. For instance, there is so much accumulated fear within the world projected from wars, the slaughter of billions of animals, pain and suffering of women and children that exists in the astral plane that if the link becomes weak we can no longer discriminate the physical from the astral. The fear, pain and anger “out there”, affects our thoughts, fantasies and emotions, and we lose control. A physical trauma such as a severe blow to the head, sexual or physical abuse, excessive alcohol and mind-altering drugs such as LSD, ecstasy, cannabis and heroine can weaken this shield. Persons who are channelers open themselves up the astral plane also. One striking example of this is schizophrenia. This is a distorted view of reality, which may include hallucinations, hearing voices, delusions, and paranoia. Ayurveda recognizes this to be a symptom of a destructive astral force or entity entering the physical body commonly known as possession. Many Hindu priests, as well as Catholic priests, are taught a certain practice through prayer and sanctified water to rid the sufferer of the negative energy. Calamus, Holy basil and Gotu kola are then administered with perhaps some time being spent in a ‘sattvic’ or loving monastic environment.
Allopathic Psychiatric Treatments
Psychiatric treatment for mental illness can take many forms. The patient is encouraged to recognize their problems, understand what may trigger undesirable behavior, and develop coping strategies. Mood-stabilizing aim to moderate manic episodes of bipolar disorder and may also reduce recurrences of depression. Recently, however, some experts think there has been a rush to medicate and have questioned the effectiveness of many drugs. There is also controversy about using these drugs – such as Ritalin or amphetamines to treat children.
Various Mental Disorders and Ayurvedic Treatments
Among the most common mental illnesses is clinical depression. It is described as a prolonged, debilitating sadness, and feelings of hopelessness that is often accompanied by no highs or lows, just a bland existence which will ultimately lead to thoughts of suicide. The numbers of adolescents suffering from clinical depression have risen alarmingly in the last 10 years. Statistics show that suicide is the third leading cause of death in youths between 10 and 19 years old.
Bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression) is an affective disorder that causes periodic mood swings in which they cycle from depression to mania. Depression may be characterized by having a lack of motivation, difficulty doing tasks, short attention span, decreased appetite, crying spells, difficulty in getting to sleep or sleeping too much, and in the more severe cases thoughts of self harm. Mania is separated into two types: Full mania and hypomania. Mania may be characterized by a decreased need for sleep, decreased self-control, overspending, increased sexual activity, irritability, rage, risk-taking behaviors, and in the more severe cases psychotic states. Hypomania is described as having the same behaviors, to a less extreme level.
A need to arouse the sufferer’s interest and enthusiasm in life is introduced to the sense of taste. Spices like ginger, cardamon and basil are used to open the heart and mind. Calamus teas are given with a little ginger and honey. Mints and sages of all types are useful. Triphala is given to alleviate constipation. Color therapy is used with warm tones of yellow and gold. Long walks are encourages in nature at her best; sunshine, river, lakes and forests. All these places are filled with pranic energy.
Cutting or Self-Injury
Self-injury involves self-inflicted bodily harm that is severe enough to either cause tissue damage or to leave marks that last several hours. Cutting is the most common form of SI, but burning, head banging and scratching are also common. Other forms include biting, skin-picking, hair pulling, hitting the body with objects or hitting objects with the body. Although suicidal feelings may accompany SI, it does not necessarily indicate a suicide attempt. Most often it is simply a mechanism for coping with emotional distress. People who select this emotional outlet may use it to express feelings, to deal with feelings of unreality or numbness, to stop flashbacks, to punish themselves, or to relieve tension. Although SI is recognized as a common problem among the teenage population, it is not limited to adolescents. People of all sexes, nationalities, socioeconomic groups and ages can be self-injurers.
Often, the sufferer feels the need to stimulate themselves by pain. Ayurveda uses nervine herbs like Trikatu, cayenne, cardamom, cloves and calamus. Warming and nourishing these feed the emotional heart. Pippali is good also, 1/4 teaspoon with honey every few hours. Avoid sleeping during the day.
These include post-traumatic stress disorder, panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anger disorders, hypochondria, and phobias such as agoraphobia (open spaces), claustrophobia (small places), acrophobia (heights), arachnophobia (spiders) and social phobia (being around people). These are all characterized by powerful feelings of panic and physical signs of fear, sweating, and a racing heart – due to some cue in the environment, or for no obvious reason at all. Many sufferers believe they are either going insane or going to die.
Anxiety is mainly a Vata disorder and Ashwaganda is generally given am and pm in warm milk. Aromatherapy, using rose and jasmine is used. Warm massage and gentle, slow yogic techniques. Maha Mantra and Shrim mantra should be spoken.
There are three common eating disorders; anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. Each disorder has different affects on the human body. A disease that used to be associated with young women is now appearing in young men. Anorexia is characterized by a significant weight loss, which is usually resulting from excessive dieting. Sufferers see themselves to be overweight, or fat, no matter what their actual weight may be. Anorexics may also use compulsive exercise to control their weight. Anorexics commonly strive for perfection in all the things they do. They set extremely high standards for themselves, and feel that they always have to prove themselves. They may also feel that the only thing they have control over in their lives is their weight. People with bulimia engage in cycles of gorging or binging themselves on large quantities of food and then purging through vomiting or use of laxatives. This can have a disastrous effect as with repeated purging the sufferer will lose their teeth from stomach acid and the use of laxatives will eventually render the bowel muscles useless.
To begin with the patients should fast on orange juice and water for first three to five days. After the juice diet the patient may adopt an all fruit diet for a further five days, taking three meals a day of juicy fruits, such as apples, pears, grapes, oranges, pineapple, peaches at five hourly intervals. Thereafter they may adopt a restricted diet of easily digestible foods, consisting of lightly cooked vegetables, juicy fruits, and buttermilk for about ten days. During the first three to five days of the juice fast, the bowels should be cleansed with a warm water enema each day. Teas of cardamom, fennel, and fresh ginger to help regulate digestion and stop vomiting; valerian, nutmeg, herb ashwagandha. Massage with sesame oil, and sandalwood.
Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD
ADHD, sometimes known as ADD, is a common behavioral disorder that affects an estimated 8% to 10% of school-age children. Boys are about three times more likely than girls to be diagnosed with it, though it’s not yet understood why. Children with ADHD act without thinking, are hyperactive, and have trouble focusing. They can’t sit still, pay attention, or attend to details. Recent research links smoking during pregnancy to later ADHD in a child. Some studies have even suggested a link between excessive early television watching and future attention problems. It has been advised that children under 2 years old should not have any “screen time” (TV, DVDs or videotapes, computers, or video games) and that kids 2 years and older should be limited to 1 to 2 hours per day, or less, of quality television programming.
Child’s diet should consist of fruit, grains and vegetables full of natural vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. Eliminate caffeine, sugar and other sweets, processed food, MSG, aspartame (NutraSweet) and other sugar substitutes, and any foods that contain preservatives, food dyes or other chemicals and eating at fast food chains. Drink water, fresh homemade vegetable and fruit juices. Eliminate sodas and caffeinated beverages. No white bread. No processed peanut butter: It contains aflatoxin, a fungus that causes cancer. Instead use almond butter from your health food store. Children need a lot of rest and should go to bed early. Proper exercise daily- outdoors in the fresh air and sunshine. Play with your children!
Note: Ritalin closely resembles an amphetamine. It is a cocaine-like drug that induces zombie-like behavior in children. The public school system’s idea of ADHD treatments is prescribing Ritalin which, like all toxins, come with a long list of side effects including nervousness, nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, insomnia, joint pains, headaches, increased blood pressure, fever, rapid heartbeat, abdominal pain, and psychosis.
Knowledge is Empowering
Many people take medication to help control or manage the symptoms of their mental illness. A clear knowledge and understanding of medication and possible side effects combined with knowledge and understanding of both oneself and one’s illness is often important in achieving a sense of personal control over the symptoms of the illness. Knowledge enhances your ability to self manage your medication to get the maximum benefits from it while reducing the potential for side effects and the risk of relapse. Acquiring knowledge also enhances your ability to negotiate effectively with the treating doctor about dose, frequency and the types of medication choices. Keeping up with current advances in medication research and the new drugs as they become available also increases your medication and treatment options. Remember it is your body and mind, and your decision what treatment you are going to choose.
Jon: Now, I mentioned Echinacea, it’s a great one. A lot of people are not aware, but good herbalists can identify 100 or 1000 or 1500 herbs by taste or smell. They can tell you how strong they are. It’s like, there’s no machine yet that can match the pallet of a wine expert. No machine can match the taste and smell of a good herbalist. I can do maybe 100, 200 herbs. I’m not even close to 1000 or 1500. Echinacea though is a simple one. Every herb has what’s called a signature characteristic. If you have two bags of peppermint tea and you brewed pots up and one of them tasted like dish water and the other had a really nice strong, crisp peppermint taste, anyone would go, oh that’s good peppermint and that stuff stinks. And they would be absolutely right. The signature characteristic of peppermint is the peppermint taste. The signature characteristic of Echinacea is that it numbs and tingles the mouth. The more it doesn’t, the stronger it is. You can run tests on the active ingredients they know and it will verify that they are far stronger than the ones that numb and tingle stronger. I’ve gone to health food stores and bought 30 brands of Echinacea, tested them and actually when I did this 10 years ago I found only one that had any activity at all. 29 of them, the only Echinacea of value was the word that was on the label. There was nothing inside.
Jon: Yeah, they could have been using Echinacea but it was of such low grade that it had no impact.
Kevin: So, let me get this straight again. It numbs.
Jon: And tingles the mouth. You take Echinacea tincture and you squirt it in your mouth, two droppers. Take two droppers and swish it around in your mouth for about 15 seconds and swallow it and you should find your mouth numbing and tingling and actually saliva should be flowing and if it’s really strong, it will actually start to make you gag in your throat, because your throat starts to catch. The more it doesn’t, the stronger that Echinacea is. The one thing we could do very easy is if we took the same stuff and we would brew it the two ways and one of them is if we used good quality Echinacea and the first one would numb and tingle your mouth and would blow people away. In fact, I actually use to walk around with three bottles. One that I bought at the store, a commercial Echinacea that had virtually no activity but was a very popular brand, to the one we created using a higher quality herb which is about three or four times stronger than that and then that same herb brewed the new way with the new technique that we had and we’ve since measured it and it’s a 100% stronger.
Jon: Yeah and actually what would happen is I did it once in a large scale demo. I will never do it again because people started gagging all over. Their throat started seizing up it was so strong. So we had a few go, ugh, ugh, ugh – several hundred of them.
Kevin: So I imagine that the value in terms of price is – I mean, you go to get these tinctures, they’re fairly expensive regardless, so it would make sense if it is any extra money, is it extra money to get —
Jon: You know actually, it isn’t extra money because you actually get more bioactive ingredients out. You’re actually making stronger stuff. You actually use less of the good herb than you would otherwise. Actually, the process lowers the cost so what you are doing and what you’re paying for is still the quality of the herb but the process actually makes the cost a little less for us because we get more high quality tincture out of a slightly less herb, because it does so much better. Also, one of the things I mentioned, you have water and alcohol as the solvents making the tincture. That still leaves behind anything that is oil soluble and we found a way that we can use that process to also pull out the oil soluble bio-chemicals.
Kevin: Oh, that’s cool.
Jon: Yeah, which makes it even stronger, but you use good quality herbs, good quality Echinacea – we have one formula, an antipathigen formula. It’s not even a tincture actually. It’s a pressing of garlic and horse radish and habanera and things like that and it’s got liquid zinc in it, grapefruit extract, olive leaf extract.
Jon: It’s an antipathigen formula that was so strong we actually were contacted by people in the government who wanted us to send them some 100 bottles and we did. It was tested for bird flu, Ebola, small pox, anthrax. It went to the Department of Defense, U.S. Army, Walter Reid Medical Hospital and an agency that I’m not suppose to mention but they’re all initialed and we were told that it passed all their tests.
Kevin: Are you serious?
Jon: And they sent it out. We were told it was going to an outside lab for verification and we wouldn’t hear again unless it failed the test. That’s the last we heard so I don’t know.
Jon: But we know it works and for colds and flus like that. That’s actually a topic worth discussing on why antibiotics and antiviral don’t work and why natural substances do.
Kevin: Yeah. That’s very important.
Jon: The problem is that when you take an antibiotic and an antiviral, you’re actually breading super bugs. It’s very simple. When you take an antibiotic, anything that survives it, by definition is one that has a resistance to that antibiotic or antiviral.
Jon: So what you’ve left now is a pool of those that have a resistance. They breathe, they duplicate and you’re actually sort of breeding bacteria and viruses that are immune to the antibiotics and there it turns out they have the ability to pass that immunity onto other species, they’ve found. So if you get immunity going like in a staff, the next thing you know, all bacteria has that resistance. That’s why antibiotics are a problem; well, one reason. The other is they are one dimensional. They kill bacteria in one way. They either, like some, will break the cell wall open. Others will work and stop the energy production, the mitochondria of the cells, but it’s one thing that that antibiotic does so it makes it very easy for bacteria to build a resistance. There are now bacteria, for example, that have protection on the cellular wall against the antibiotics. So when it’s a one dimensional pack, it makes it makes it very easy for these very primal structures, which reproduce rapidly in a matter of weeks, viruses in just a few weeks, bacteria in 12 months to or six months to maybe a year and a half can start to develop a resistance and passed around.
Even natural substances — take garlic — we use garlic in ours. We use 30 cloves crushed so you have the juice of 30 cloves in one bottle and it smells it, but garlic has over a hundred substances in it that are known to be antibiotic, antibiotics. So it’s not just a hundred times more effective. You now go into gaming theory because you get them in combination. In different ways you start to actually get hundreds of thousands of combinations of these things that present a resistance to these viruses and bacteria. You combine a few other ingredients and you actually have a combination that starts to go into, you know the rival the number of stars in the universe because it goes up expediential, which is why that even though things like garlic have been around since the dawn of man, they still work against bacteria. Garlic at one time was used against anthrax. Those poor men, the poor farmer’s protection for anthrax on their animals and it worked. In groups though. There were farmers feeding their animals in Korea kimchi which is high in garlic and it was stopping bird flu. It works and it’s impossible for bacteria and viruses to build a resistance, because they’re so complicated.
Kevin: Now in terms —
Jon: That’s something to keep in mind the next pandemic that comes around.
Kevin: Sure. Now in terms of the good bacteria, the good flora in your stomach, will garlic will wipe that out, as well.
Jon: Garlic actually is pretty benign. There’s sort of a regression. There are certain things you don’t want to do. One for example, is goldenseal.
Jon: Is one that kills bacteria, great for limited use, but know if you use it regularly it will kill your good bacteria.
Kevin: Got you.
Jon: Coidal silver is another one. It tends not to be kind to intestinal bacteria. So if you use it on a daily basis, that’s a problem. My recommendation for coidal silver is use it for external use and use it internally only for extreme situations.
Kevin: Sure. Great. That’s good information because I’ve always wondered that if it’s an antibiotic, wouldn’t it kill the bacteria. So that’s good.
Jon: Yeah, it depends. It does. Some are more benign than others. Garlic though is one that’s actually quite benign to the beneficial bacteria.
Kevin: And if you were taking something like goldenseal or something like that, would you recommend taking a probiotic with it or it’s not even worth it.
Jon: Well, I recommend – yeah if you’re using it daily, you use your probiotic. Otherwise, after any round of antibiotics, anything you’re using that’s killing bacteria, you want to use probiotics again.
Kevin: Yeah. Why don’t you just talk about the base line of health programs and just some of the things that you offer under that huge umbrella of just incredible information and products?
Jon: Yeah. If I saw something that somebody else was doing well, I wouldn’t duplicate it. But we created those products that I thought weren’t being done well enough or weren’t easily available. Where people weren’t using consistently high enough quality herbs or whatever, so we offered detox formulas, supper food formulas, enzymes and a couple of formulas that are worth noting is we make what is we’ve been told by people who’ve tested it is the strongest probiotic enzyme formula, which we haven’t talked about yet, but in one of the more important formulas you could use is a high proteases formula that you take without food to go into the blood stream.
Jon: Where there it will do things such as kill bacteria and viruses in the body because they all have protein coverings, if you will, that could be broken down. It also breaks up clots in the blood, repairs it, eats up scar tissue. They’re great things. Another formula we have uses certain combinations of herbs that slow down the digestion, the simulation of high glycemic, carbohydrates, so it stops insulin spikes.
Kevin: Got you. Well, Jon, you’ve given us a ton of information and I think that anyone whose listening to this call can take something from it and that’s an extreme value so thank you so much for doing that.
Your memory is like a muscle; it needs to be used daily or it will waste away. Fortunately, there are many memory improvement techniques that you can implement that will ensure a long lasting memory for decades to come.
The science behind what makes your brain and memory function is still a long way from being fully understood. There are constant theories and medical journals being published about this elusive organ, many of it conflicting. This makes it hard to know for sure what to do in order to keep our minds healthy and active. Here are a few things that are known for sure.
• Relieve stress: When you are tense and anxious, your brain can’t function properly. All you’ll be able to think about are the things that are stressing you out. Learn to handle people and situations in a way that won’t have you reaching for cigarettes or bourbon.
• Play some music: New studies have shown that soft classical or jazz music in the background can stimulate brain function. Hard rock music doesn’t count.
• Supplements: Local health food stores carry a variety of brain-boosting supplements like omega 3s, fish oils, ginko biloba and others.
• Write it down: Make lists of grocery store items, or chores you need to get done for the day. This will save you from having to remember them.
• Keep everything in its place: Keep a basket by your front door for items you use daily like your wallet, keys etc. You’ll soon get into the habit of putting them in the same place and you will always know where they are.
• Use your imagination and creativity: When you read a book or watch a movie, think about how you would have done things differently if you were in charge of the characters and plot.
• Do a daily crossword: puzzles and brainteasers will enhance your cognitive ability. There are a variety of puzzle books you can buy, or find some online. Even your daily newspaper prints a daily puzzle.
• Cut out processed foods: These are full of artificial ingredients and chemicals that were made in a lab. They interfere with your brain function and deteriorate your memory. Choose fresh, wholesome foods from your local farmer’s market whenever you can. Even better, grow your own garden with fresh herbs and vegetables.
• Keep learning new skills: Always challenge yourself to learn something new. Take an art class, or try a new recipe or way of cooking. When you are learning you are using your brain and boosting your memory.
• Stimulate your senses: Paint your walls a funky colour, or add some colourful fish to your tank. Install a bird feeder outside your door, and then look up the birds that come to visit, and see if you can name them.
• Play some memory games: there are hundreds of different games you could play, both online and offline. Make up your own, or play some online. Be careful, though, if you play on the computer: they are addictive and you’ll find yourself playing for hours at a time.
These memory improvement techniques are simple to implement into your daily lifestyle. Start off with one or two, and add others as you get more comfortable. You will soon notice a big difference in how your mind works, and how much you can remember, both short term and long term. You will live a life full of energy, vitality and health. Your family and friends will want to know your secret. You can share the techniques with them so that they too can improve their memories.
Isn’t it nice to know that the memory we have now doesn’t have to be the one we have a year from now? There are many tips and techniques to improve memory that you can incorporate into your daily life.
• Put Some Flowers Indoors: This will add a sensory boost and will also make a nice addition to your home decor.
• Put a fish tank in your home with interesting and colourful fish; a bird house and feeder outside will help too. Things that you can see, touch, smell and hear will add a sensory boost, which will in turn help your memory. Try to remember how many birds you’ve seen, or look them up in a nature book.
• Memory Games: There are many games you can play, both online and offline. Card games, Mah-jongg, even solitaire will help. Try this: Write down 10 numbers in random order and study them for a few seconds, then try and recite them out loud. How many did you remember?
• Try a new recipe: Cook something from a completely different culture, or with food you’ve never eaten before.
• Music: Studies have shown that soft music in the background will stimulate your brain cells. Classical or jazz work best, not heart-pounding rock.
• Eat Healthy: Get those fruits and vegetables in, as well as your omega 3 fatty acids. Some of the best memory-boosting foods are berries, spinach, salmon, romaine lettuce, pomegranate, walnuts, ground flaxseed, and broccoli. If you find it difficult to get all this food into your daily diet, choose quality supplements from your favourite health food store.
• Physical Exercise: When you look great on the outside, you’ll feel great on the inside. Exercise releases hormones like endorphins that help you feel good and stimulate your brain cells. It makes sense that your inner body and outer body work together, doesn’t it?
• Read Books: Read novels and personal development books that challenge your thinking; mysteries, religious books and goal setting books are all good choices.
• Sleep: When you get enough rest, your mind won’t be over-stimulated and can do its job properly. When you can get a deep sleep, your subconscious mind is at work. How many times have you gone to sleep with a problem, and woken up with an idea of how to fix it? That is the power of your subconscious.
• Get outside: Pick a quiet time of day and go for a walk on the beach or in the woods. Slow down and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature; this will help quiet your mind. These days, we tend to take so many things for granted, and forget the things that are right in front of us. Take in the simplicity of the squirrel running through the woods, or the waves crashing against the shore. Pick some seashells, or some interesting leaves. Then look them up when you get home and see if you can find the names of them.
When you take the time to work at improving your memory every day, it will soon become stronger and more vital. Your memory is like a muscle; you have to use it or you’ll lose it. No matter how old you are, you can use the above tips in your daily routine, and you will start to notice improvements in a very short time. When your brain is active and healthy, you will live a life full of vibrant energy and vitality. You will be able to enjoy your life and your loved ones for many years.
It’s a sad fact that most weight-loss techniques leave you feeling hungry and tired at best, woozy and malnourished at worst. Is there a weight-loss technique that won’t make you feel deprived- some magic food that can help you lose weight? The mainstream media would like you to think so- that there’s a weight loss shake or magical smoothie or dietary supplement that can melt off the pounds. Honestly, though, the trick to weight loss through diet isn’t to go for the newest, high-tech weight loss strategy: it’s to eat the way your body was made to eat. That’s right- the food that will help you lose weight is the food that your ancestors ate thousands of years ago. It’s called the Paleo diet.
The theory behind the Paleo diet is that the more processed and refined your food, the more likely your body is to store the food as fat. By eating as early Man did- lean fish and game, nuts and berries, vegetables- your food will help you lose weight by breaking down quicker and more easily than refined grains, cheese and dairy products. By choosing food that has not been substantially altered by farming and cultivation, you’re choosing food that will help you lose weight: no one ever saw a fat caveman!
Since most of the modern, cultivated sources of grains and meat have been bred for yield first and foremost, the nutritional content of farmed meat and cultivated grain is substantially lower than those products’ wild counterparts, and especially for meat, the fat content is significantly higher. Additionally, don’t forget that milk is the natural, perfect food for newborns: creatures who need a lot of fat in order to get the highest caloric impact out of whatever they can fit into their tiny bellies. Milk is a food tailor-made to help a species’ young gain weight- not a food to help you lose weight. And other dairy products, like butter and cheese, have a concentrated fat content higher than most of the popular milk fat percentages you see in your supermarket dairy case.
The fats and oils in foods that have not been altered or cultivated- most types of nuts, wild caught fish, and gamier meats such as buffalo and venison- are widely considered “healthy” fats. Fats like Omega-3 Fatty Acids are found in wild salmon and other fish, and the oils in nuts like almonds and hazelnuts promote good cholesterol and promote brain and heart health.
As a proud pet owner, most people naturally want the very best for their furry, four-legged friends. It is likely your emotional investment began the moment you, and your new found companion, looked into each others eyes for the first time.
If you happen to be a stickler in keeping high, physical health care standards for yourself and your family, then ensuring that your pet has a safe, healthy, and happy life is certainly going to become a top priority too. With a return to summer, which everyone enjoys, including our pets, it can also bring to mind some seasonal health concerns regarding our extended, family members.
This does not have to wreak havoc on your personal finances, however, as five important common sense strategies can head off several unnecessary, and expensive trips to your veterinarian. These natural approaches should leave everyone in the household feeling happier, especially your pet! And, they are economical in the long-term.
Safety Tip 1
Keep pets cool
Hot temperatures combined with high humidity interferes with an animal’s natural ability to pant, which is how they cool themselves. This kind of weather is very hard on your pet. Unlike humans, who can cool themselves by sweating through pores in the skin, canines and felines only have sweat glands in noses and paw pads. Hence, a dry nose is a warning sign of a feverish or dehydrated animal.
Always provide your pet with a daily, fresh water supply. This applies to any season, but it is especially important in the summer months. If your pet is recovering from surgery, illness, or has become severely dehydrated, there is even special electrolyte-enhanced water available for dogs. Search for those in larger pet or health food stores.
Your pet will be happier, and much more comfortable, being left at home on a shopping trip. If you feel you must take them out on a hot day, never leave them in a vehicle with the windows down, even for a few minutes.
Getting wet in a creek, lake, or child size wading pool can help keep your dog cool. Be mindful, though, to rinse off your dog’s fur after a swim in the ocean, or a chemically treated pool.
Long-haired animals need daily brushing or combing to avoid heat-trapping matting or tangling of coats. Regular hair cuts or trimmings during hot weather, can help keep pets cooler. Just be careful, if your doing it yourself though, don’t shave the animal. Skin that has never seen sunlight will burn easily!
Safety Tip 2
Stinging, biting, and blood sucking insects can affect your pet’s health, happiness, and behavior. A bee sting can inflict as much pain and swelling on your pet as it can you. Pull stingers out with fingernails or tweezers. You can dab the affected area (except around the eyes) with a diluted solution of half apple cider vinegar or tea tree oil, water mix. Exception: do not use these disinfecting mixtures on a small dog, puppy, or cats.
When it comes to repelling, and protecting, your pet from common parasites like fleas, ticks, lice, mites, and mosquitoes, look for safe non-toxic products containing ‘neem’. Most of these products are a bottled liquid mixture. There are several creative ways of using them from mixing them up to use as a dip, mix in your dogs shampoo, or even soaking a cloth collar can repel the health hazards of external parasites, naturally.
Safety Tip 3
Both owner and pet benefit, tremendously, from a mentally and physically active lifestyle. Regular physical interaction with your pet provides not just physical benefits, but emotional ones as well. All kinds of physical activity can be incorporated as game playing with your pet friend. It will promote healthy muscle stimulation, and sharpen cognitive mental functioning.
Just remember, in hot weather months, use the keep your pet cool rule. Schedule these types of activities in the cooler parts of the day.
Safety Tip 4
Control ear infections
Ear infections can be a common problem in the summer with long-eared dogs, or water loving ones. Most ear infections are caused by yeasty types of bacterias.
An ounce of prevention technique, that works rather in humans too, is mixing up a solution of equal parts of white vinegar and isopropyl rubbing alcohol. Store in a dropper bottle and dispense a few drops into each ear after water exposure to the ears. The alcohol helps dry out the ear canal, and the vinegar lowers the pH, making the inside of the ear a less than ideal environment for bacteria to thrive in.
Safety Tip 5
Whether you wish to increase an older pet’s energy and vitality, get better control of internal (worms) or external parasites, or relieve problem allergies, all of these can be done from the inside out through diet improvement.
